Types of ERPs
In our previous blogs in this series, we have gone over, how to start your search for the right ERP and what an ERP is. Another important factor to understand is the types of ERPs. Having an ERP solution that works with your company, and has the right tools is important, but figuring out of what type of ERP is the right one isn’t always the easiest task.
Let’s break it down a bit. The first thing to note is that there isn’t always a cookie-cutter fits all solution. There are things you can do with ERPs to help them fit your personal needs. One thing to think about is the size of your company. There are Big Business ERPs and Small Business ERPs. “Big Business ERP” is often deployed onsite/on-premises and helps large companies/organizations address a wide variety of issues. These are usually handled by large IT and consultant teams in-house. Then there are SMEs, which cover Small-Medium Enterprises. This is more of what we at Polaris handle. Although, there has been more and more of a shift from these ideals and limitations.
Previously we used the words on-premises. This refers to the 3 main types of hosting solutions for an ERP. There is On-Premises, Cloud-Based, and Hybrid ERP software. On-Premises is implemented on site at the physical office of the organization. The cloud-based software or Software as a Service (SaaS) is newer to the world of ERP, but hitting the ground running. This is where no matter where in the world you are, you log onto a secure server online and are able to access your ERP right there and then. Then there is “Hybrid” which is a combination of the two and provides more flexibility.
These are the main “overview” ways to break down an ERP. There are of course more in-depth ways to know which industry is supported by which ERP, but that is also different from company to company. So for now, this is where we leave you with that.
